Michalina's story

At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.

My best moment with SAP so far happened when I was conducting workshops for high school girls about working in IT and introducing them to the work of a UX Designer. When I saw these girls starting to believe that there is a place in the industry for them, that they can achieve success, and that IT is not only coding, it gave me a lot of satisfaction.

I’m from Poland and have lived here nearly my whole life – except for that gap year in Australia that lasted three years! After I came back, I made a big professional change and that's how I ended up at SAP. I fell in love from day one. The office, the people, the atmosphere - I felt at home here.

We are currently working from home, but I still feel connected to the office as I can see part of it from my apartment.

I am a UX designer and it’s hard to explain to people outside of the industry what this means. I find there is a stereotype that every person in IT deals with coding, so people are surprised when I say that I do not know anything about it. When introducing myself, I explain I try to make our final product as functional and intuitive as possible.

My role is mainly to create mock-ups and present them to developers as solutions that will facilitate the use of our products. I spend my days looking for inspiration, possible solutions and designing them. Later, the developers code the solution and implement it into the product.

Since I was a child, I have wanted to do something that changes the world and has a real impact on the lives of others. I studied and worked in the Environmental Protection Industry, but this job turned out to be different from my expectations and the longer I worked there, the more I felt powerless and unhappy because I didn’t feel like I have an impact. It was also not a very hospitable place for a young girl. That’s why, after returning from Australia I made the career change into UX design and came to join SAP. Here I found a job that gives me satisfaction and the feeling of having a real impact.

If it weren't for my work in SAP, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to work with an international team and exchange experiences with people from other countries and cultures. The variety of points of view and the extensive personal and professional experience of the international team help broaden your perspective. By discussing and helping each other, we develop creativity and innovation to solve problems and meet customer needs in new and exciting ways.

I love to be creative and work manually, so when I am not designing at work, I am restoring furniture. I can spend long hours polishing, painting, or upholstering. The look of furniture coming back to life gives you incredible satisfaction, strength, joy and a sense of agency.

If I had to change my job (although I would prefer not to, because I really like my current one), I would be renovating furniture in full time. Having your own barn to work, maybe organizing renovation workshops ... furniture renovation is primarily taking care of the environment. A piece of furniture that will serve the next few generations is one piece of rubbish less and a great souvenir.
