The Challenge

Moving to the cloud without pausing operations

Enel S.p.A. is a multinational energy company and a global integrated operator in the electricity and gas sectors, with a focus on five continents. The company has around 67,000 employees and serves 70 million customers. The Italian energy giant is one of the most technologically diversified companies operating in the global renewables market, constantly embracing new technologies to make energy more reliable, more affordable, and more sustainable.

Today, as global challenges become more and more demanding, Enel is finding ways to innovate to help solve them. Its first step was to transition its business to the cloud. This would allow Enel to bring energy to more people through new technologies and develop innovative methods of energy management for customers. Not only that, but the company also hoped it could form a network of research, technology, and development collaborators that would introduce new solutions to build a future of progress for all.

The Solution

Leaning on expert support during a critical transition

Enel chose SAP S/4HANA as the foundation for its digital transformation in the cloud. SAP S/4HANA empowers the company with intelligent ERP and the foundation to integrate modern technology and software solutions.

The energy services Enel delivers are imperative to people around the world, so it knew it needed to safeguard its digital transformation to keep business moving. SAP MaxAttention services provided support throughout the transition from on-premise operations to the cloud. The services proactively detect challenges that could endanger the go-live of SAP S/4HANA and helped Enel reach system stability without disruption.

SAP MaxAttention is a program providing expert support services that put the value of digital transformation within reach. For Enel, the services helped maintain the performance of critical processes in SAP S/4HANA when moving to the new infrastructure and transitioning to Amazon Web Services. Experts from SAP MaxAttention provided the skills necessary for Enel to overcome its unique challenges. They also collaborated closely with Enel’s chosen SAP partners – Atos SE and Accenture. Together, they tracked, traced, and analyzed performance and applied recommendations for improvement.

The Result

Creating the future of energy with the latest technology

With SAP S/4HANA, Enel strengthens its status as a leader in energy dedicated to innovating with technology. SAP MaxAttention helped bring Enel into the future by paving the path to cloud-based business.

Using SAP MaxAttention, Enel was able to get up and running quickly with SAP S/4HANA and Amazon Web Services. Experts from SAP MaxAttention helped the company smooth over system peculiarities such as architectural complexity, sizing, and scale-out by using a colocation group. This splits and distributes tables that are too large to be stored on one database node.

Enel used SAP S/4HANA to improve meter-to-cash processes. For instance, it achieved higher throughput for meter-to-cash executions, with 1.8 million documents printed during testing. This was an increase compared to data gathered prior to the hyperscaler migration. The company improved operations, which freed up valuable resources for other critical business processes. SAP S/4HANA has enabled the company to focus on application and database optimization as well as infrastructure tuning, tables distribution, and system parameterization.
