When Philips Domestic Appliances became a stand-alone company called Versuni, it rebuilt its entire IT infrastructure to better serve its customers through accelerated, meaningful innovation. Versuni chose the RISE with SAP solution to become an insights-led, digital-first company and redesigned everything from e-mail, accounting, and marketing through manufacturing, the supply chain, and customer-facing systems.

Future-proofing a legacy of customer-centric innovation

Versuni was born in a unique and enviable position. As the domestic appliances spin-off from Royal Philips, the newly formed company has both a rich history of innovation and a product line already adored around the world. It also has the competitive advantage of a young organization built on the latest technology.

 

Versuni believes that a home is more than a house. With more than 900 patents under its name and a portfolio spanning appliances for cooking, coffee, garment care, floor care, and climate care, the company’s mission is to build lifetime relationships with its more than 20 million customers and help them make life at home better, easier, and healthier.

 

To ensure that it can take its legacy into the future and continue innovating for the needs of consumers, Versuni knew that it needed to transform its entire technology landscape. It had to go from best-of-breed solutions that serve its healthcare parent company to the best-of-suite applications that power modern, digital-first consumer goods organizations.

 

Becoming a truly digital, data- and insights-led company meant that technology and processes had to be transformed and integrated within all domains of the organization, from design and production to shopping carts and home delivery.

Exuviate: Out with the old, in with the new

Versuni gave its ambitious transformation program a name: exuviate. Insects and reptiles “exuviate” and shed their old skins or shells to make room for new, better-fitting ones. The process is uncomfortable and it leaves the animal vulnerable during the change, but the risk and discomfort is all worth it once the stronger new exterior has emerged. Versuni’s exuviation of its technology landscape was very much the same.

 

Exuviate is based on the RISE with SAP solution. With SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition at the core and a suite of intelligent enterprise solutions from SAP, RISE with SAP enables faster innovation and iteration while providing better scalability and control over IT infrastructure. And Versuni uses intelligent enterprise solutions from SAP to improve employee engagement by enabling employees to make data-driven decisions.

 

The SAP solutions at the heart of Exuviate allowed Versuni to simplify and harmonize ways of working effectively across business functions and processes throughout the organization, which reduced the risk and increased the efficiency of the transformation. And the streamlined approach to IT established the foundation that Versuni needs to execute on its vision of becoming a customer-centric enterprise whose employees are empowered to make informed decisions and drive growth.

 

Versuni selected partner Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to implement this single system integration approach and provide lifecycle services from strategy and advisory to execution and operations. With a 20-year partnership between TCS and SAP, TCS’s experience is steeped in deep industry and SAP technology expertise.

 

The transformation involved over 800 people from Versuni, TCS, and SAP working together across 25 functional workstreams. It also included building 80 new cloud applications and 40 new networks, migrating more than 300 data objects, and redesigning over 400 reports and 3,500 processes.

We selected RISE with SAP to build a new technology architecture and business application landscape. Now with SAP S/4HANA Cloud at the core of a wall-to-wall SAP software environment, we’re well on our way to becoming the company we need to be.

Driving innovation, operational efficiency, and better insights

Working closely with SAP and TCS, Versuni succeeded in completing its transformation within 18 months – 6 months ahead of schedule. It established a clean digital foundation and transitioned to innovative business models that prepare it for growth without technology restraints.

 

The integration of end-to-end processes, more robust data management capabilities, and better use of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence have improved every area of the company. Versuni now has new processes across its business, including HR (hire to retire), finance and procurement (procure to pay and forecast to pay), and sales and distribution (order to cash and source to pay). In addition, the company benefits from intelligent processes in its supply chain (market to order), product development (idea to market), customer care (design to service), and other areas critical to its global operations.

 

RISE with SAP has helped establish a foundation for Versuni’s vision of becoming a customer-centric enterprise – one that has a holistic view of its customers, understands their needs, responds to their feedback, and innovates and creates products that positively impact their daily lives. And that means Versuni can continue to turn houses into homes for many more years to come.
