Endeavour Energy: Shaping a modern data fabric architecture that exposes critical data for electrifying analytical insights

Explore Endeavour Energy’s journey with SAP

Energy network operator Endeavour Energy needed timely data insights to stay ahead in the rapidly changing energy market. With limitations in its legacy data landscape, the company made the decision to create a modern data fabric architecture that included integrating the SAP S/4HANA Utilities solution with the SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud solutions.

Centralizing data model access to optimize visualization and analytics

Endeavour Energy is a trusted supplier of safe, reliable, and affordable power, connecting a population of 2.7 million people in New South Wales, Australia, to traditional and renewable energy sources. The energy company serves homes and businesses located in the area of Sydney’s Greater West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Illawarra, and the South Coast. Its vast network of more than 430,000 power poles and streetlight columns, 202 major substations, and 32,600 distribution substations are connected by almost 60,600 kilometers (37,655 miles) of underground and overhead cables. Endeavour Energy integrates with renewable energy sources, including 200,000 residential solar connections, industrial solar power, and embedded large-scale batteries.

Amid rapid electricity network industry changes, Endeavour Energy is committed to helping deliver a clean energy future where smart meters, batteries, and solar power enable customers to generate, store, and sell back electricity into the grid.

In its transition to a distributed system operator, Endeavour Energy recognized the critical role data would play as an enabler of value creation. And having invested in the SAP S/4HANA Utilities solution, the company wanted to take advantage of direct access to live data in the advanced ERP. But with its homegrown centralized data hub unable to provide near-real-time access to the underlying data and business context or meet ad hoc reporting requirements, Endeavour Energy sought another way.

Before we included SAP Datasphere in our data fabric architecture, our self-service analytics and reporting capabilities were not able to deliver at the increased pace required by a modern energy business. To modify an existing report was heavily labor intensive and took weeks to execute.

Tailoring a data fabric architecture for more-immediate insights

Endeavour Energy is committed to powering communities for a brighter future by using the latest technology and data to plan the grid of tomorrow, where batteries, microgrids, and solar connections integrate with the traditional distribution network. Part of this commitment includes transforming into a data-driven company with advanced analytical capabilities by making data more available for the business with a data fabric architecture. Endeavour Energy’s aim was to be able to personalize customer interactions and provide data-driven insights for asset maintenance, energy balancing, supply and demand, and network resilience, while enabling access to the data on mobile devices.

To get there, Endeavour Energy joined forces with SAP gold partner Bluetree Solutions Pty Ltd and selected the SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud solutions. Endeavour Energy also took advantage of sovereign cloud capabilities from SAP to support its critical infrastructure status.. Bluetree created a proof of concept to demonstrate the real-time analytics capabilities of SAP Analytics Cloud connected to SAP S/4HANA and showcased the agile data modeling, data lineage, and data integration features offered by SAP Datasphere.

With the success of the data fabric proof of concept, Endeavour Energy focused on deploying SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud with SAP S/4HANA Utilities to manage data across the meter-to-cash process. Standard content models were used to accelerate dashboard development for customer composition, metering, and billing. For procurement analytics, the company used SAP Datasphere, SAP BW bridge as a way to transfer data from the SAP S/4HANA solution for central procurement to SAP Datasphere.

The diagram below illustrates Endeavour Energy’s data fabric architecture, connecting SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP S/4HANA, and SAP Datasphere, SAP BW bridge, as well as other solutions and third-party data sources.

Using SAP Analytics Cloud, business users can self-serve analytics, interact with the reports, change the navigation and filters, explore and expand insights using a data analyzer, and make dynamic variance comparisons with minimal IT support. Previously, modifications could take several weeks and needed IT involvement. Today, access is instant through self-service functionality.

Enabling a rich data foundation that’s accessible at any time

The strategic move to a data fabric architecture helps Endeavour Energy extract maximum value from its investment in SAP S/4HANA by extending it with best-fit technologies. By connecting SAP S/4HANA and SAP Datasphere on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), Endeavour Energy mitigates the need to replicate the data in external systems.

Having a data fabric architecture exposes Endeavour Energy’s data model and embeds corresponding business context, allowing analysts to self-serve reports in SAP Analytics Cloud and explore underlying business transactions using drill-down tools. SAP Datasphere has simplified the role of customer experience analysts at Endeavour Energy, helping them unlock the true value of meter-to-cash customer-related data.

For Endeavour Energy’s operations management team, there’s more insight into procurement spend, thanks to accessible information on purchase orders, deliveries, invoices, and payments. With important spend data at their fingertips, users can quickly look up total spend, analyze the number of contracts that have reached expiry, and pinpoint contract utilization. For inventory analysis, whereas there used to be a significant time lag in reporting, now data from the embedded model flows directly from the advanced ERP, bringing latency down to less than eight minutes.

SAP Datasphere integrated with SAP Analytics Cloud has simplified our work as customer experience analysts at Endeavour Energy, giving us a single tool for data preparation, modeling, and planning.

Stretching its data fabric architecture across more business areas

Endeavour Energy is now in the process of expanding its data fabric architecture, with plans to use SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud to expose other data models across various business areas, starting with asset maintenance and finance.

What’s more, Endeavour Energy can reuse the data models created for procurement reporting to improve the objectivity of its environmental, social, and governance reports.
